A step increase in streamflow in the conterminous United States

چکیده
[1] Annual minimum, median, and maximum daily streamflow for 400 sites in the conterminous United States (U.S.), measured during 1941 – 1999, were examined to identify the temporal and spatial character of changes in streamflow statistics. Results indicate a noticeable increase in annual minimum and median daily streamflow around 1970, and a less significant mixed pattern of increases and decreases in annual maximum daily streamflow. These changes in annual streamflow statistics primarily occurred in the eastern U.S. In addition, the streamflow increases appear as a step change rather than as a gradual trend and coincide with an increase in precipitation.

Streamflow Impacts of Biofuel Policy-Driven Landscape Change
Likely changes in precipitation (P) and potential evapotranspiration (PET) resulting from policy-driven expansion of bioenergy crops in the United States are shown to create significant changes in streamflow volumes and increase water stress in the High Plains. Regional climate simulations for current and biofuel cropping system scenarios are evaluated using the same atmospheric forcing data ov...

The development of paleoclimate streamflow reconstructions in the conterminous United States (CONUS) has provided water resource managers with improved insights into multi-decadal and centennial scale variability that cannot be reliably detected using shorter instrumental records. Paleoclimate streamflow reconstructions have largely focused on individual catchments limiting the ability to quant...
متن کاملEstimation of 7-day, 10-year low-streamflow statistics using baseflow correlation
[1] Estimators of low-streamflow statistics are often required for water quality and quantity management at gauged and ungauged sites. Here the technique of baseflow correlation is investigated as an estimator of the 7-day, 10-year low-streamflow statistic at ungauged sites. This method uses an information transfer technique to estimate streamflow statistics at an ungauged site by correlating a...
متن کاملDeveloping a Watershed Characteristics Database to Improve Low Streamflow Prediction
Information regarding topographic, meteorologic, geologic, and geomorphic characteristics is increasingly available in spatially explicit digital formats. Of interest is whether enhanced spatial processing of newly available digital grids can lead to new estimators of watershed characteristics which may in turn, improve our ability to predict extreme hydrologic events. Regional hydrologic model...
متن کاملModeled Areal Evaporation Trends over the Conterminous United States
Long-term (1961–1990) areal evapotranspiration (AE) has been modeled with the help of 210 stations of the Solar and Meteorological Surface Observation Network within the conterminous United States. Modeled AE, averaged over all stations, has shown an overall increase of about 2–3% in the period 1961–1990, both on an annual basis and over the warm season (May–September). The rate of increase has...
